I am a huge Quentin Tarantino fan, he’s a genius writer and director! I was hooked in the 90s with ‘Pulp Fiction’, and everything Tarantino’s released since has my full attention! It’s the way the characters interact with each other; and how we see what the “bad guy” does at home with his wife and kids. Tarantino knows how to get under his characters’ skins to truly reveal who they are. So I just knew I needed to make a kickass The Bride Cosplay!
“I’m drawn to powerful women, and The Bride is no exception.”
So Kill Bill Vol.1 (2003) is about a woman (The Bride/Beatrix Kiddo/Black Mamba) who wakes up from a coma and finds that her baby is dead. As a result, she wants revenge on the people who did that to her. It’s revealed that she was part of a gang of assassins, named the Deadly Viper Squad, whom Bill is the leader and also her ex-boyfriend. When she found out she was pregnant, she ran away to keep her child safe from that life. Months later they come and find her, and kill everyone she knows, thus starting her on a journey of vengeance and death.
Uma Thurman is magnificent as this character, the movie also stars a huge variety of talented actors such as Daryl Hannah, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen; Sonny Chiba; George Liu, Kenji Oba, Chiaki Kuriyama and tons more. This movie has cool ass fighting and lots of blood – definitely my kind of thing. Vol.2 is more of a story movie, which reveals more about the characters. It doesn’t have as much violence, but it’s got a “happy” ending… of sorts.
THE BRIDE COSPLAY (aka Beatrix Kiddo)?
I’m drawn to powerful women, and The Bride is no exception. In Vol.1, she only weeps for a few minutes for the death of her child, but then all hell breaks loose and she goes for the kill. She stops at nothing to get her revenge, including a Japanese gang called the Crazy 88. It’s not just a clever name – she cuts through roughly 88 gang members to find O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), who is the head of the Yakuza. She’s strong, powerful, sexy and demands your respect.
The outfit is a tribute to Bruce Lee’s yellow jumpsuit from “Game of Death” (1978), but they modernised it by making it a biker outfit, with more feminine features. For The Bride Cosplay, I specifically wanted the yellow jumpsuit that she wears in the movie during the Crazy 88 fight scene. Looking closely, I found that it was a tracksuit underneath the biker outfit, so all-in-all they are all yellow suits with black stripes on the side of the arms and legs.
- I made a pattern from a tracksuit and sewed the entire outfit, finishing the details off with black material down the sides and a yellow zip on the top (Cons are often very hot and I wanted to be able to take the top off if I needed). I wore a yellow tank top underneath.
- An old pair of black sneakers, which conveniently had similar details to hers, I painted yellow and black with fabric paint and sealed – I wish could make the sole, but that’ll take some more knowledge and practise.
- The sword, was made using a friend’s old practise katana, which was wood, I then painted it silver and used tennis racket handle grip around the top. A friend printed me some dragon stickers, which I then stuck on and sealed to the sword.
I was very lucky to find and be in a little Kill Bill group at rAge 2015. I was joined by the amazing SushiBunny, who went as Gogo Yubari and Lynzaykat’s Crazy Adventures, who was O-ren Ishii. It was lots of fun!
On a side note: make sure your elastic on your pants is sewn properly. Mine snapped towards the end of the day and I kept having to pull up my pants ! 😛
